SUMMARY:

General Motors is recalling certain model year 2009-2014 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through May 14, 2014, Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured June 6, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured April 9, 2008, through May 14, 2014, and 2009-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured April 14, 2008, through March 18, 2010. In the affected vehicles, the flexible steel cable that connects the seatbelt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue and separate over time.

CONSEQUENCE:

If the steel cable becomes fatigued and separates, the seatbelt may not properly restrain the seat occupant increasing the risk of an injury in a crash.

GM will recall 1.18 million three-row crossovers for airbags that may not deploy in a crash. All Buick Enclave,Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Acadia models from 2010-2013 are affected, as well as some models from 2008-2009. The 2008-2010 Saturn Outlook is also included. An electrical problem may disable the side airbags. Dealers will need to remove the airbag wiring harnesses and "splice and solder the wires together."

A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.

Consequence: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.

Remedy: DEALERS WILL PERMANENTLY DISABLE AND REMOVE THE HEATED WASHER FLUID MODULE. AN UPDATED PAGE FOR THE OWNER MANUAL WILL BE PROVIDED AND INSERTED IN THE OWNER MANUAL TO DOCUMENT THAT THE FEATURE HAS BEEN PERMANENTLY DISABLED AND REMOVED FROM THE VEHICLE. This massive recall of about 1.5 million vehicles results from the danger of engine compartment area fires because of an unfixable defect in the system that squirts heated cleaning fluid on the windshield. GM says it will pay $100 to each owner of an affected car because the fluid heater system has to be completely disabled on each vehicle. An early announcement on the press wire says that GM is recallilng almost 90,000 2008 Buick Enclave vehicles, and 2007 GMC Acadia and 2008 GMC Acadia models, along with 2007 Saturn Outlook vehicles and 2008 Saturn Outlook vehicles for windshield wiper defects.

It's a geographically limited "regional" recall, meaning that not all vehicles in all states will get the recall. GM is limiting it to Alaska, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin, Wyoming, and the District of Columbia.
